Off the back of trying to form a band called Secret River Band, just before the Covid-19 Pandemic, songwriter and guitarist Craig Chapman developed the theme into a prayer of inner strength to help navigate the inside out world we’d had thrust upon us. Craig was working as an air filtration engineer with more than 30 hospitals during Lockdown - which he describes as a very thankless task and one where it was so hard to believe in a higher power amongst the clueless chaos suddenly thrust upon the world. The lyrics express standing up for what you believe in and hold dear, whether it might be religion or other values that “guide us through the dark”.
The Secret River referred to in the song does actually exist! The River Sherbourne is an underground river in Coventry with roughly 1.7km of its course culverted and hidden beneath the city centre. This inspired Craig to write about a Secret River comparing it to a secret inner river of strength which helps us to believe in ourself and tackle this upside down world.
Craig’s second meet up with vocalist Laura and old band mate Glyn Styne-Tiers, (who guested on album track “Just Fine”) developed the lilting harmonies. The band came together as a five piece at the end of 2021 as Covid regulations started easing, and as the group’s sound developed Pat and Dave wound their counter melodies around the theme, and drummer Craig’s beat lifted the middle section of the song. Before settling on the name Chasing Twisters, the band once again considered the name Secret River Band but as an acoustic ballad the song featured less in sets than their driving Brit-grit country anthems, and the name Chasing Twisters gave more of a punch. Finally, five years after its inception Secret River was brought to life and give the spotlight on the the Chasing The Season EP.
As Get Ready To Rock asserts, Laura’s voice absolutely shines. bringing a soul and gospel feel to this stripped-back acoustic country track. An alternative, scaled back “Chapel Mix” also features on the Chasing The Season EP with just acoustic guitar, piano and voices.
